John Ittel harvests only one - and - one-half acres a day of his specialty crop - sod. But it's enough work to keep eight people busy through the growing season and five of them working all year long. His Green Prairie Sod Farm, in College Corner, Ohio, grows and sells a crop that never dies.

Seeded 18 months earlier, the sod is mechanically cut from the ground in ten-square-feet, rug-like sections, each 2 feet by 5 feet. The rugs are rolled and delivered within hours to a site where they will become someone's permanent lawn, athletic field, or golf course.
