- Nearly all sod failures are due to poor watering practices
- With an automatic sprinkler system, some hand watering may be
necessary to set the first sod laid before an entire sprinkler
zone can be completed.
- Test for wetness. Lift up the sod in several areas to be sure
the soil beneath the sod is wet.
- Remember
..sprinklers miss corners!
- Sod cannot be hurt by over-watering unless it puddles on top.
When sod wilts (the leaves roll up and turn a darker color), it
has already begun to die! Watering at this point will save many
of the plants, but once a plant is dead, no amount of water will
bring it back.
- Grass needs 1 ½ inches of water a week - more than that
around trees.
Roots follow water! Thorough, less frequent watering is best for
healthy plant growth. Frequent, shallow watering results in shallow
roots.
